About the Tachikoma Fanlisting

About Mechanical Innocence

Hello, and welcome to the all-new Mechanical Innocence, the fanlisting for the powerful, playful tanks known as Tachikoma, from the anime series Kokaku Kidotai, more popularly known as Ghost in the Shell. The Tachikoma are specifically featured in the televised anime series, Stand Alone Complex, and its sequel, Stand Alone Complex: 2nd Gig. They were based upon the Fuchikoma tanks that appeared in the original Shirow Masamune manga.

What’s a Tachikoma?

A Tachikoma is a fictional, artificial walker/roller “tank” of sorts, appearing in the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex TV series and its sequel (or second season), Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C 2nd Gig. The Tachikoma were inspired by the Fuchikoma of Shirow Masamune’s Ghost in the Shell manga, but due to copyright issues, they couldn’t be included in the animated features. In the 2nd Gig series, Uchikoma also appeared; these didn’t have quite the advanced AI of the Tachikoma, though.

By the way, the word “tachikoma” is made-up; it doesn’t translate to or mean anything in Japanese. Furthermore, it is its own plural, much like “fish” or “sushi.” So you have one Tachikoma, or you might have three Tachikoma, or hey look! There’s a herd of Tachikoma coming after us, run!
